"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a inseparable unit. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to form a group."

"And thus anyone is invited to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the award.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The album was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent confidence required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide audience.

Yet the band will always be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," says Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
