Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
