The Global Health Body Issues Concern Over Severe Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Fewer than one in 10 people who could benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy have access to them, states the WHO as it issues its initial guidance on the medications.

With more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

According to estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines recognises that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major barriers to broad availability to the injections that can assist patients in reducing significant weight, says the body.

GLP-1 Therapy Shortage

Even in the current best projected outlook, the supply of GLP-1 therapies could only cover around 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, as stated by the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to expand access, via approaches including licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

The injections imitate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and increase feelings of fullness so people eat less.

People usually see weight reduction after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Studies indicates patients may see weight return after a year of stopping the treatment, as their usual appetite come back.

To be overweight or obese elevates your likelihood for experiencing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in all nations and was associated with over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
